These reports are particularly crucial for checking that students are on track to complete all subjects successfully for semester one. As is usual practice with these reports, they will identify any student who needs to at- tend supervised after school sessions to complete due work and assessment tasks not al- ready submitted. STAFFING UPDATE We will be farewelling Michelle Pepi a little earlier than expected when she commences her family leave as of next week. We wish Michelle the very best with what will be a very welcome addition to her life. Stacey Kyriakou will be taking on Michelle’s role as Year 9 Coordinator, and we are finalising the appointment of a teacher to cover her classes for the remainder of the year. 2014 SRC The assembly for awards was also an opportunity for this year’s SRC to have their first public appearance, and to lead their first assembly. These student representatives are Year 12: Harry Murray, Courtney Niemann, Year 11: Bella McMillan, Danny Do, Year 10: Nadire Thomas-Capar, William Ward, Year 9: Flavia Hai, Jack Pardy, Year 8: Hayley Cas- sidy, Spencer Davis, Year 7: Luey Kemp-Mykyta, Claire Welch. These students are to be commended for putting themselves forward for this leadership role, and for the extra commitment and demands of the role in representing the students of the col- lege. (see more details on the work of these students in the SRC News below) Maria Bawden – Principal SRC NEWS The 2014 Footscray City SRC have been meeting weekly since our school-wide Election Day in March. After receiving our badges, electing Nadire Caper-Thomas as our College Council Representative, and being formally recognised at our whole-school assembly, we are now fo- cusing on organising fundraisers and school activities, as well as addressing school issues that are important to students. Some of the things we are currently planning are: Supporting MS Australia, an organisation which raise money and awareness for suffer- ers of multiple sclerosis in Australia. An ‘International Hot Dog Day’ to raise money for new microwaves in the canteen. We will be making hot dogs from different countries and voting on the tastiest ones! Helping our year 10′s to organise a formal night A campaign to design a sporting mascot for our schools sports teams An excursion to an SRC conference in June We would like to invite students to send us feedback, questions and ideas to our email ad- dress footscraycitysrc@gmail.com David Borg – SRC Coordinator MUSIC NEWS It has been a busy term in the music department with a lot of events happening and many more to come. We welcomed Tuan Le to our teaching staff and our students accompanied him to an excur- sion to the Royal Melbourne Hospitals music festival, where four of our music ensembles played for patients, staff and visitors. It was a wonderful day and we received a people’s choice award and great feedback from all involved, including a story about a patient who had- n’t left her ward in a week, until she heard our groups and decided to check out the band! Our vocal teacher Louisa Rankin held our first big evening performance on the 15th of May in the theatre. It was a fantastic show featuring our singing groups and soloists, in front of a large audience. Rehearsals have started for this year’s school production of ‘The Addams Family’. The music is incredibly difficult and we would like to recognise the talented and brave students who will form our band for this show. Angus Ingram, Rueben Cumming, Max Hazeldine, Judd Harley, Matilda Colebrook, Sam Sharkey, Archie Beattie, Bridget Jones, Liam Hazeldine & Euan Burke Upcoming dates for music performances Monday 26th of May: Senior Bands Night, featuring group and solo performances from our VCE ensembles. Thursday 5th of June: Mid-Year Music Concert, featuring performances from across all year levels and instrumental music groups David Borg – Music Teacher JUICE BAR In March this year, a small group of students from the Year 9 Community Action Project ran a fresh fruit juice bar during Open Day with the aim of raising funds for the Thao Dan Children’s Scholarship Fund in Northern Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. For every $200 we raise this or- ganisation will send an underprivileged child to school for a year. Learning about helping others and becoming involved in our community is what the Commu- nity Action course is based around but getting out and actually raising money for a good cause is really satisfying. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Our students have now begun their second semester for 2014, but we took the time last week for a Year 7 – 11 awards assembly to acknowledge the outstanding performance of some of our students in semester one. Congratulations to the fifty-eight students across the year levels who were the recipients of academic excellence awards (see students listed be- low). The assembly also provided the opportunity to congratulate all students who received good news for themselves and their parents/carers when their semester one reports arrived via Compass at the end of last term. A Big Term for the Performing Arts Our 2014 school production, The Addams Family is opening this week on Thursday evening, 31st July, and will run until Saturday evening, 2nd August. If at all possible, please come along to be entertained and support the large group of students who have been working with our performing arts teachers for many months, to stage this large scale production. (See the attached Addams Family promotional poster for booking details) A few weeks later following The Addams Family, there will be the staging of an installation performance based on two of Shakespeare’s plays, Othello and The Tempest. This performance project has been funded by Arts Victoria, and is a work of collaboration between FCC and Western Edge Youth Arts. It involves approximately thirty of our Year 8 to 10 students working with four different artists—a Shakespeare dramaturge, a designer, film-maker and artistic director, Dave Kelman who is also director of Western Edge Youth Arts. It will culminate in a series of 45 minute performances on the 28th and 29th August. Invitation to Participate in Discussions About an Education Precinct Maribyrnong City Council (MCC) and Victoria University (VU) have together been involved in discussions for some time about developing the concepts of ‘a university town’ and an ‘education precinct’ within Footscray. In the latter part of last term, the principal of Footscray City Primary and I were invited to a meeting with Maribyrnong City Council to gauge our interest in participating in discussions with MCC and VU about the ‘education precinct’ concept. As a concept, it is an interesting, and potentially exciting one that envisages greater connections between the education providers across the life-span – crèche, kindergarten, primary, secondary, and tertiary including the university of the third age. As Footscray City Primary and FCC are two of the closest primary and secondary schools to MCC and VU, we have been invited into discussions as possible participants in the precinct concept. Should the concept get support and more importantly funding, there is a suggestion that a feasibility study be undertaken to look at the re-location of FCC to a new ‘state-of- the-art’ facility possibly on the VU Nicholson St campus. At the moment the College Council has agreed that the Council President, Mike Sturmey and I participate in discussions with MCC and VU, but this is the only commitment at this stage. It is early days for the concept with a significant number of ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ attached to it, particularly around funding. If something were to eventuate at a later date, the development and implementation of such a concept would be a long term project, and would be unlikely to impact on the operations of the college for a number of years. Should the concept advance beyond the hypothetical at any point, the College Council will ensure that a full school community consultation process is put in place. In the meantime Council will keep the community informed of any further developments that may evolve. Maria Bawden – Principal ENGLISH NEWS An ensemble from the Complete Theatre Works Company performed Bertolt Brecht’s, Life of Galileo for our Year 12 students this week. The play, which deals with the clash between the church and science following Galileo’s ‘heretical’ work on the Copernican system forms part of the students’ Context Study, ‘Encountering Conflict’. The performance and following Q and A session was well received and provided further insight into the play and the nature of conflict, something that our students will be able to draw on during unit 4 and leading up to their final English exam. The Complete Theatre Works Company will return in September to perform Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet for our year 10s On Friday the 21st of July, year 10 English students, Lilian Ly, Elea Tipping, Ian Druce and Madison Peake were selected to attend a writing enrichment day at Victoria University, which was aimed at introducing students to pathways to becoming professional writers and to improve their writing skills. John Box – Acting Head of English PHYSICS MASTER CLASS On the 10th of July, the University of Melbourne hosted a master class for the study of particle physics. Two VCE Physics students from Footscray City College, Samuel Kleinig-Neumann in Year 9 and Devpriya Thahanappu Hettiarachige in Year 11, were invited to attend. The class met at the University’s Physics building where the events of the day took place. To begin, students were treated to a lecture that explained “the standard model” of particle physics. After developing an understanding of these particles, participants learnt how to detect electrons, muons and photons when analysing data collected by the Large Hadron Collider. Students also had the opportunity to participate in a virtual visit from the other master classes in Adelaide and Sydney and a virtual visit with Dr Paul Jackson from CERN (the European Organisation for Nuclear Research). The activities were highly interesting and the day provided a de- tailed insight into the tasks carried out by particle physicists. Tom Falzon – Physics Teacher JAPANESE STUDENTS VISIT FCC FCC students of Japanese enjoyed cultural exchanges with Japanese students from Tokorozawa Nishi High School during the last week. Students participated in sushi-making, calligraphy and origami sessions amongst other activities, making new friendships which some will rekindle when they visit Japan at the end of the term. Download the pdf version of our newsletter here . FCC Newsletter Issue 10 web Principal’s Report Update on Footscray Education Precinct Concept In our last newsletter it was reported that FCC had been invited to participate in discussions with Victoria University, Maribyrnong City Council and Footscray City Primary to explore the development of an education precinct. The college council endorsed the school’s participation in these discussions. The council was of the view that the education precinct concept had merit and potential, with some exciting possibilities for developing greater connections between the education sectors from crèche to tertiary level. It was also reported that there was a suggestion to relocate FCC to a state-of-the-art facility, possibly on the Nicholson Street campus. As well as such proposals being significantly dependent on funding and feasibility factors, it should be noted that Victoria University intends to fully utilise their Nicholson Street campus buildings as part of the master planning to progress their ‘university town’ concept for Footscray. Since publication of the most recent newsletter there has been a further development, with the Leader of the Opposition, Daniel Andrews, announcing that the Labor Party is putting its support behind the education precinct concept. It has pledged $15 million to advance the concept with a feasibility study, master planning and possible relocation of FCC with expanded capacity, should Labor win the state election on 29th November. This commitment was announced last Tuesday (5th August) when the Leader of the Opposition was joined by Marsha Thomson, Wade Noonan and the Shadow Minister of Education, James Merlino at Footscray City Primary. It was also stated that currently there is no specifically identified site for a re-location. Clearly nothing is a fait accompli at this point in time and the whole discussion of advancing the education precinct concept is significantly predicated on the outcome of the state election in November. In principle, the college council welcomes the commitment to put more funding into education within the community. It would also be keen to include our school community in wide consultation to explore the potential benefits and opportunities for our students, with any options that may be forthcoming. Council is pleased with the current growth and development of the college, and in particular the substantial growth in our enrolments. Supporting and strengthening the stability and growth of the school will be our over-riding consideration in any planning initiatives for the future. 2014 School Production - The Addams Family The four performances of our 2014 production were a sell-out, playing to packed audiences. The school has a long tradition of staging high quality annual productions, and this year’s was no exception. In fact, the relatively new musical ‘The Addams Family’ was one of the most ambitious and challenging shows staged at the college. The music was complex and there were high demands on the actors, singers, dancers and stagecraft crews. Undaunted by this the large cast and musicians gave a highly polished and professional performance, supported by quality work and effects from the backstage crews. The success of the production seemed to be largely due to an amazing collaborative effort. It involved approximately 60 students and a large team of teachers, ex-students, parents and friends who generously donated their time and expertise. Special mention must go to our volunteers who included: Maddie Kerr a year 12 Graduate who returned to co-direct the show, to Sarah Mulholland also an ex-student who returned to assist with the makeup, to Clare Madsen and Steven Smith, two of our parents who have given invaluable assistance with prop/set design and construction for the last three of our annual productions, and to Steve Colebrook, another parent who supported our musicians in the woodwind section of the band. A very special acknowledgement must also go to Emily Unt Wan, the dynamic director and driving force behind the production, always striving for perfection and getting the best out of the students with their various theatre related skills and talents. All students and others involved are to be congratulated on the level of dedication and commitment that resulted in an outstanding performance. Of course, as a college we are very proud of the level of our students’ talent that not only enabled them to meet the demands of a challenging production, but most importantly that kept their audiences delightfully entertained. The students included Lead characters: Laura Kerr, James Madsen-Smith, Madison Peake, Jamie Brown, Leo Palmer, Bella McMillan, Oscar Lillicrap, Maddison Vernon-Hayes, Rourk Velanovski, Andrew Price Ensembles: Georgia Doslov, Lainey Drake, Maddie Drury,Lucy Redmond, Vincent Victory, Imogen Braun, Darcy Altschwager, Emily Matijevic, Nadia Harley, Izzy Sturmey, Larissa Goates, Ruby Baum, Samira Reason, Rylee Whitlow, Lily Veal, Claire Welch, Claire Trevena, Jada Kyle, Dhaun Coupe, Finnia Gray, Rosy Jones, Kimberley, Bianca Bestrin, Andrew Page Featured Dancers: Madeline Hird, Chrystal Mahlia, Monica Reason Musicians: Arch Beattie, Reuben Cummings, Max Hazeldine, Angus Ingram, Hugo Speth, Sam Sharkey, Matilda Colegrook, Liam Hazeldine, Euan Burke, Judd Harley, Bridget Jones Audio Visual Crew: Ian Druce, James Mckenna, Jake Lees, Danielle Thielke, Reid Sargent, Max Taylor Hair & Makeup: Persia Hethorn-Faulkner, Cheyenne Coad and Kirsten Armstrong Backstage Crew: Toby Thomas, Darcy Lucid, Roma Bond, Elea Tipping, Yvette king, Nyria Langham, Rory Young, Darcy Smith, Spencer Davis, Isaac Castellano, Bree Andrews, Max Taylor Maria Bawden – Principal The Addams Family – from the Director Well, the school musical has closed for another year and boy was it a rollercoaster! If I said that this production was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, it would be an understatement. “The Addams Family” is the largest and most complex musical I have ever been involved in, but it is also one of the most extraordinary. Being one of the first school or amateur groups in Victoria to ever perform this new musical didn’t stop us from giving everything to make this show incredible. The fact that the music was written for professional musicians (some, we believe, with eight arms), and that we had 40 students and a band to squeeze […]

Work Experience is a key part of the Year 10 program where students experience the world of work. Students have a short-term placement with employers, who will provide insights into industry and the workplace. Students are placed with employers primarily to observe and learn – not to undertake activities, which require extensive training or expertise. Work Experience is undertaken at the employer’s premises and has enormous benefits for students. How can parents help? It is an exciting time when your son/daughter first enters the world of work via Work Experience. There are several things you can do to assist with this: Help your child understand the employers’ goodwill in offering the placement. Encourage your child to have realistic expectations about the type of work they will be undertaking. Your child will not be able to do hands on work but can do simple tasks after proper induction and always under supervision. The days will be longer than a school day. Complete the Work Experience Arrangement form accurately and return it to the school before Monday October 27th. Both the employer and student will receive a copy. The school will keep the original form. Advise the school of any health matters that may affect your child’s Work Experience. Talk to your child about the importance of OHS and their responsibilities. Ask to see the safe@work Certificate awarded to students. Students need to complete their modules before a students’ Work Experience is approved. Help your child organize safe travel to and from work. Discuss your child’s Work Experience placement and help with any potential or perceived difficulties. Notify the school immediately if your child is absent from work or is having difficulties with the placement. Talk to your child about work and careers. Information about Work Experience has been emailed to all year 10 students and you. A hard copy of these documents will be delivered to students during this week. The key dates in 2014 Monday, October 27 2014 Return of completed work experience arrangement forms and Health and Safety certification. Monday, December 1 until Friday, December 12 inclusive Year 10 Work Experience Placements Friday, December 12 Final day for year 10 2014 students in their workplaces.

Principal’s Report Progress Checks We hope that parents have been able to access the latest release of progress reports on Compass, and that you have had the opportunity to discuss them with your son or daughter. If you have any particular concerns please feel free to contact the year level coordinator. Reporting to parents on student progress approximately every five weeks – mid-term and end of term – is intended to strengthen our home-school communications so that we can work together in supporting our students to achieve successful outcomes in all areas of their studies. Parent/Student & Teacher Interviews Monday 15th September The parent/student and teacher interviews scheduled for the last Monday of the term will provide the opportunity for you to have a three-way discussion about your child’s progress so far this semester. We do want to emphasise that these Progress Report Interviews are for the students as well as the parents, and our staff look forward to meeting with you and your son or daughter on this occasion. You will receive notification when the booking system for interviews is opened on Compass shortly. Year 12 Trial Exams Year 12 VCE students have their Trial Exams ahead of them at the end of term, starting with English on the afternoon of the progress report interviews. Apart from some of the Maths exams scheduled for the last Friday of term, all other trial exams will take place in the first week of the September holidays with the same supervisors they will have in October and November. These trial exams help develop familiarity and confidence for performing in the final exam setting. They are also a timely impetus to trigger the more intensive revision required in the last stretch before the final exams. Bayside Youth Documentary Film Festival Awards For a number of years now, documentaries produced by our students in the Year 9 project, Hot Docs have been entered into this Festival held by the Bayside Council in the Brighton area, and every year our students have taken away awards. It seems that his year will be no different with four of our films shortlisted for the major awards. These films and the students responsible for them include Video Games. A Murderer’s Playground – James Madsen-Smith, Joel Verth, Andre Arellano, Ben Booker Love for the Board – Strummer Cullip-Bartlett, Oliver Veljanovski, Eaman Mahmoud Lost in the Music – Reuben Cumming, Angus Ingram, Angus Glover, Ennis Kelly My Footscray – Hamish Hobson, Dominic O’Day, Declan O’Rourle, Liam Ta Congratulations to these fifteen students, and it will be an exciting time at the Palace Dendy cinema in Brighton this Friday evening when the films are screened and the awards announced. Although we will miss their teacher Sue Dwyer who is currently on leave in Barcelona, but her emails suggest she is very excited for the students and will be keenly awaiting the outcome of the awards. Victorian SRC Congress 2014 Thank you to Clair Welch, Year 7 SRC representative and Spencer Davis, Year 8 SRC representative for volunteering to represent FCC at the Victorian SRC Congress held at Somers over a Friday and Saturday recently. It was a great leadership experience for both students where they participated in parliamentary style debate, attended the issues café, prepared proposals, developed questions to go to our state politicians and went through an election process for the Victorian SRC. Congratulations to Spencer Davis who was one of approximately thirty students who put themselves forward as candidates for the Vic SRC, and was one of the fifteen students elected. His required 30 second speech to the Congress, obviously demonstrated his persuasive powers as a young orator. We are very proud to have Spencer as a representative on this state wide organisation for student leadership, and he will be a very busy person with activities such as a training camp, monthly meetings, meetings with politicians and visits to other Victorian schools. Having Spencer on this body will undoubtedly allow him to bring back some great ideas for our SRC as well. Finally we look forward to seeing as many parents and students as possible on the afternoon or evening of Monday 15th September. Maria Bawden Principal Be Not Afeared Footscray City College and Western Edge Youth Arts, as part of the Extended School Residency program of Arts Victoria present a highly original, interactive, theatrically immersive experience for two days only. Together with artists and designers from the Western region of Melbourne, our students have devised a beautiful performance based on two of Shakespeare’s richest texts, The Tempest and Othello. Using characters and inspiration taken from the theme of love, our audience are invited to meet with the characters from Prospero’s Island and the dark and passionate world of Othello’s mind blowing jealousy and powerlust. Audiences will be guided through the theatre by our student performers and see the work of digital artists and filmmakers projecting our own young people as they embody the characters from these two worlds, all inspired by the genius of William Shakespeare’s original plays. The theatre has been painstakingly adorned with the work of resident artists and year 8-10 students from across all areas in the college so that audiences can be transported through soundscape, delicate lighting design the drama and poetry of Shakespeare’s words, and that of FCC student writers as well. Don’t miss this incredible collaboration, see flyer for times and use trybookings.com for tickets. Places are strictly limited. DATES: THURSDAY 28TH 6.30 AND 8PM FRIDAY 29TH 6.30 AND 8PM Ancient Day As part of Humanities in Year 7, all students participated in Ancient Day activities on Thursday 21st of August. Mobile Phones For FIJI Can You Help ? Our students will be visiting Fiji next term and hope to supply the village with mobile phones that can be distributed to families with children. Young children have to leave the island at 6 years old when they go to primary school and are often away from their families for months at a time. Parents are unable to speak to their children. Although mobile phones are expensive in Fiji, the cost of Sim cards is not. We need mobile phones that no one uses anymore. The phones should be: Clean and in good working order Unlocked and not tied to a phone provider Cleared of any personal data Include the charger and if possible and an instruction manual. Can you help? If so, please drop your old mobile and charger into the Office before the end of term.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Farewell to Our Year 12 Students – Graduation Dinner It is time to bid farewell to our Year 12 students who completed their final classes on Friday, and then gathered for their Graduation Dinner at Flemington Racecourse, in the evening. Most of our Year 12s joined us in 2009, with others coming later, and the Graduation Dinner was a very special event and a fitting celebration to mark their completion of school and these years with us. It was an absolute pleasure and honour to be part of this occasion with families, friends and staff celebrating the achievements and the contributions to the school of these young people, and congratulations goes to all of them on achieving their VCE or VCAL certificates. All students present, had their moment of recognition when they were individually presented with an award for completion of either the VCE or VCAL. There were also some who returned to the stage to accept awards for leadership and excellence in different subjects. Special mention must go to Sabiq Muhtadi who received excellence awards in five subjects – English, Math Methods, Specialist Maths, Physics and Chemistry – which earned him the Highest Performance Award, as well. This award was donated by our local federal MP Tim Watts, who unfortunately was unable to attend the evening, hence it was presented on his behalf by Marsha Thomson MLA for Footscray, and one of our School Council members. Two other students who deserve special mention are Brett Curran and Addi Lautman-Wurt who were the valedictorians at the dinner, and on behalf of the year 12s, both spoke with warmth and eloquence about the school and their time with us. Of course, acknowledgements would not be complete, without recognition of the teachers, Program Manager (Vicki Tentzoglidis) and Coordinator (Will Marshall) who have worked with and encouraged our students to reach this final point of their schooling. On behalf of the college, the graduating class of 2014 are wished the very best in all of their future pursuits in life after Footscray City College. Increased Numbers for Year 7 2015 On the one hand we are farewelling our Year 12s, and on the other we have a significant number of Grade 6 students waiting to join us next year. We have almost 200 students confirmed for Year 7 in 2015, taking our homegroups from the current six to eight groups. There are increased numbers in primary schools, although the ‘bulge’ has not quite reached the secondary level yet, and it would also seem that these increased numbers for FCC confirm community confidence in the school and its programs. Condolences to Our Staff Member Juli Black Finally, on a terribly sad note, our heartfelt condolences go to our colleague and friend, Juli Black for the recent tragic loss of her son, Madison, 27 years of age. Maria Bawden – Principal A FURTHER FAREWELL TO YEAR 12S The departure of the Year 12 class each year is always an emotional time. For many of these students it is the end of a 6 year association with the school; for all of them it marks the end of their formal secondary education. This milestone in their lives is celebrated with a number of school events. The week beginning October 13th was marked with the last week of official Year 12 classes, the Year 12 BBQ on Thursday 16th October and dress up day on Friday 17th October. As I read and watched many accounts in the media of some of the exits of Year 12 students in their final days of secondary schooling, I contrasted these with Footscray City College and the Year 12 class of 2014 who departed from the school with dignity, style, and maturity. Last Friday we celebrated the formal Year 12 Graduation Dinner of 2014. Our students accepted their graduating certificates and awards with pride and a sigh of relief that all their hard efforts had paid off. The class of 2014 has been an energetic, engaged and creative group of young people. December 15th is the official day for the release of all VCE results. To all graduating students we wish you well as you embark on the next phase of your journey into the world of further study and work. Vicki Tentzoglidis – Yr 10-12 Sub School Manager JAPAN STUDY TOUR 2014 We participated in the 2014 study trip to Japan. On this trip we were able to visit 6 cities which were: Tokyo, Hiroshima, Hakata, Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokorozawa. We experienced the vast and ancient culture of Japan and visited many famous sites such as the Osaka Castle, Miyajima, Hiroshima Memorial Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Museum, Kiyomizudera Temple, Arashiyama Bamboo Forrest, the Tenryuji Garden and many other places. At the Tenryuji Garden, some of us had the chance to try vegetarian monk food. Many said that it was a worthwhile and were glad that they were able to try it in Japan. During our stay we visited Tokorozawa Nishi Senior High School. We were allocated buddies with whom we attended their classes, visited their after school club activities and met their friends. During these 3 days we formed a strong friendship with the students who some of us still keep in contact with now. Home stay was also a large part of our trip. We grew as students by living with a Japanese family for 3 nights. Living with a foreign family gave us an insight into Japanese food, culture, ways of life, and linguistic idioms which helped us speak Japanese in a more natural fashion. By the end of the trip we were sad to leave Japan and were all glad that we were able to attend this worthwhile, exciting, life changing journey. Download pdf version PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Exams & More Exams Our year 12 students are now well and truly into their final exam period, having started on the 29th October. So far reports from students and teachers are that the exams have been as one would expect, with no unpredictable or unpleasant surprises. This hopefully works favourably for our students and their results. But, as we know, exam performance is generally not just the result of what you know, but is mixed with levels of anxiety, with the two factors varying in proportion, according to the individual student. Year 11s start their end of year exams this Friday (7th Nov) and finish up the following Friday. On Monday 17th November, the students will commence their Year 12 program. It is compulsory and vitally important that all students attend these classes. The program runs until Friday 28th November and covers the first two weeks of work for Year 12. The early commencement program for Year 12 is to give our students a head start, as many other schools do, and it is essential that students take advantage of this opportunity and treat it seriously. Year 10 students will also follow suit shortly after year 11s, with their exams commencing Monday 17th November. The in-house exams for years 10 and 11 are about developing students’ revision and exam techniques in preparation for year 12, as well as testing the knowledge and skills they have learnt in their current year. It is expected that students put serious effort into the preparation for, and the sitting of these exams, to assist in optimising their academic outcomes, both for now and in the future. Art Show While exams and academic outcomes are of great importance, there are other parts of school life that are also important. The recent Art Show was an example of this, showcasing some of the finest creative talent we have. For all who visited the exhibition, I am sure you will agree our students’ work in all mediums – painting, drawing, photography, digital art, ceramics, wood design and graphic design – was typically of high standard with some pieces of exceptional artistic merit. Thank you to all students who had work exhibited, and thank you particularly to teachers Bronwyn McCoy, Olga Kurbienko, Beth Cleary, and Paul Dooley and pre-service teacher Jessica Geraghty-Wreford who organized all displays and were basically responsible for the Art Show happening. Thanks Also to Jessica and her students who create a beautiful glass lamp which will take pride of place on the main reception desk. Finally, a big congratulations to the winners of the People’s Choice Award, and please read Bronwyn McCoy’s article on the Art Show to find out who these two talented young people are. FCC goes to Tanzania – World Challenge Trip The school’s involvement with the World Challenge program since 2007 has been part of providing a rich variety of extra curricula opportunities for our students. So far different groups of students have visited Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Borneo, and on the 18th November another group will be taking off for Tanzania on the east coast of Africa. These World Challenge trips focus on developing students’ leadership and independence skills, as well as developing their sensibilities as global citizens. The Year 10 and 11 students along with teachers, Kellie Catanese and Mark Komp have an impressive itinerary for the Tanzanian trip. Some of the highlights are: general orientation to Tanzanian life, including buying fresh produce from local markets for cooking classes run by the local women volunteer work with a village community , helping with the construction of new class- rooms and teaching the students English a safari trip to see the impressive East African wildlife a major trek in the Livingstone Mountains and along the shores of Lake Nyasa finally, a few days of rest and relaxation on the Swahili coast. For the students on this adventure it has every prospect of being an exciting, fascinating and possibly life changing experience. They will not return until midway through the last week of the school year, so I guess we will have to wait until the new year to hear reports of their experiences. Meanwhile, it will be business as usual at FCC, with the rest of us being kept busy with such things as course commencement programs for all year levels, awards assemblies and presentation night, Year 10 work experience, and the end of year activities program, etc, until the 19th December. Maria Bawden – Principal ‘BEST FIJI TRIP EVER’ As they say at the Olympics, this was the ‘best Fiji trip ever!’ The recent year 10 and 11 trip to Fiji was as always a pleasure to be part of and not for the reasons you may think. While it’s true the snorkelling, fishing, sea kayaking, bush walks, reef adventures and explorations are a fun and exciting part of the trip the real depth of the trip comes from the cultural exchange with the village community. It is a pleasure to see the students embrace relationships with the locals through various activities whether it be basket weaving, coconut husking, language activities or culinary investigations (i.e. eating local food!) The main activity though is the dance rehearsals for the big performance on ‘Feast Night’. The students spend a lot of time with the villagers, who are very generous with their time, learning the traditional boys and girls dances but also developing strong bonds with them. This makes for a great night in the village with the feast, exchange of gifts, the performances and then general partying and even some teachers were seen to dance. I think the students are generally a little surprised at the depth of feeling they develop with the villagers and the final farewells are rarely a dry-eyed event. A special thanks to Mike Sturmey and Elaine Rose for the enormous amount of effort they made before and during the trip to make sure everything went smoothly, your efforts are […]
